Graphic Design Senior Abigail Murschell Recipient of the AIGA Austin’s Maura Rose Kampa Scholarship!
Graphic Design Senior Abigail Murschell
Congratulations to Senior Abigail Murschell on winning the AIGA Austin’s Maura Rose Kampa Scholarship!
Abigail, a BFA Studio Art major with a concentration in Graphic Design, has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship and a one-year mentorship with Christian Helms, the Founder and Creative Director of Helms Workshop, a well-known Austin-based branding and design agency working for clients such as Tecovas, MTV, The Historic Pearl, PepsiCo, Circuit of the Americas, and many more.
The Maura Rose Kampa Scholarship seeks to provide mentorship and financial assistance to talented undergraduate students of design, advertising, illustration, and photography.
The scholarship fund was started through AIGA Austin in 2015 to honor the spirit of Maura Rose Kampa, a bright young artist and design student, and the daughter of David and Marcellina Kampa, active members of the Austin design and advertising communities.
From David Kampa:
“The MRK Scholarship is different because we are not looking for the best portfolio. We are looking for a student with both need and potential. The designer who would best benefit from what we have to offer, money and a mentorship. It’s a nudge in the right direction, monetarily and creatively, that hopefully will help them achieve their design career goals. It’s a difficult, very subjective decision because all of the students are worthy, each in different ways. It’s tough because sometimes you don’t win because you are actually better than the other candidates. They are all winners, but unfortunately, only one receives the award.
We really enjoyed interviewing all of them. Each very unique in their interests and abilities. All shared enthusiasm for the Baylor program. They were all excited about design in their own personal way, each mentioning guidance or critiques from instructors that made a difference in understanding how they can use their own uniqueness as an asset in their growth as a designer. That says to me that they are receiving instruction and challenges that allow them to have a more individual/personal relationship with design and the problems they solve. Bravo!
We look forward to meeting more Baylor designers next year. Keep up the good work!”
