Overview and Facilities
The Baylor Art and Art History Department is the only R1 institution to offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration of fiber in the state of Texas. We have the added distinction of being the sole R1 fiber studio art concentration in the United States that is focused solely on the education of undergraduate art students.
The Baylor fiber concentration introduces art students to traditional fiber techniques in combination with research-based, concept-driven material thinking. Our mission is to cultivate artists and designers who engage with fiber to make the world a better place.
Courses emphasize hands-on art making, employing textile processes such as weaving, dyeing and surface design techniques, machine and hand sewing, felting, crochet, book making and altering, tufting and basketry, all within a contemporary art context. Students build visual literacy and material sensitivity through studying fiber art history, concepts, and meaning making to approach fiber art and design for individualized application in an array of creative careers from the gallery world to the textile industry.
Baylor fiber hosts regular Visiting Artist Lectures and Workshops with fiber artists and designers to help broaden our student’s exposure and connections to contemporary thinking in textiles. In addition, the Baylor Book Arts Collection is a hands-on teaching resource of over 1,500 artist books and related objects available to enhance fiber student learning. https://library.web.baylor.edu/bookarts
